Bauernhof, Grant’s Farm, Revisited

The Bauernhof at Grant’s Farm comes from German, meaning “farm court,” which refers to the walled, building-lined compound that still typifies many farms in Germany.

The architecture is typical of Sixteenth Century German states, which is an interesting mix of Gothic, or fachwerk construction (we call it Tudor Revival in America) and elements of Mannerist architecture, which spread north of the Alps out of the original Italian Renaissance.

While the quattrefoil (four leaves) pattern under the window is typical of Gothic architecture.
